How to Set Contacts as Marketing in HubSpot

Learn how to set contacts as Marketing Contacts in your HubSpot Marketing Hub.

In Marketing Hub (Starter, Professional, Enterprise), you can mark contacts as marketing to engage them through emails, ads, and workflows. Marketing contacts count toward your subscription's contact tier, while non-marketing contacts do not.
 
Set Contacts as Marketing
When Creating a Contact (Manually)
  1. Go to CRM > Contacts.
  2. Click Create contact.
  3. Enter contact details.
  4. Check Set this contact as a marketing contact.
  5. Click Create.
 
When Importing Contacts
  1. Prepare a CSV file with contacts (include email or Record ID for updates).
  2. Go to Contacts > Import and upload the file.
  3. In the import settings, check Set these contacts as marketing contacts.
  4. Confirm and complete the import.
 
For Existing Contacts (Bulk Update)
  1. Go to CRM > Contacts.
  2. Select the contacts you want to mark as marketing.
  3. Click More > Set as marketing contacts.
  4. Confirm and apply changes.
 
Automatically Set Contacts as Marketing
Using Forms (Default Setting)
  • By default, contacts who submit HubSpot forms are set as marketing.
  • You can modify this setting in individual form settings.
 
Using Workflows (Professional & Enterprise Only)
  1. Go to Automations > Workflows.
  2. Open an existing workflow or create a new one.
  3. Click + Add action > Select Set marketing contact status.
  4. Choose Set as marketing and save.
 
Restrict Users from Changing Marketing Status
  1. Go to Settings > Users & Teams.
  2. Select a user and go to the Account tab.
  3. Turn off Marketing contacts access.
  4. Click Save.
